THE SMOOTH PLAYER PARTNER NAMED DEVON $.U.A.V.E.

When it comes to being unique there are few artists as unique as the artist Devon $.U.A.V.E. The Tulsa artist first came onto our radar with his single “”. From first listen you could tell there was something different about him. The way he rapped was off beat but at the same time it was on beat. Whenever you thought his verses were going one way, they would always veer off into a totally unexpected direction. There is something different about this artist but at the same time there is something familiar in his mannerisms and delivery that remind you of a player from the 70s and sharing his game in his lyrics. So keep it cool and sit back and get to know the artists named Devon $.U.A.V.E.
1.Why the name Devon $.U.A.V.E.? Why the periods and the dollar sign? Devon is my first name. My mom gave me that so I’ll always stick with it. SUAVE stands for Stay You And Venture Everything. Meaning throughout your journey, no matter the trials, wins, and losses remain who you are and who God made you to be. The enemy likes to attack you in your weakest areas to knock you off your pivot and not fully reach your potential. You can[‘t] allow that to happen.
The dollar sign I adopted later cause money had to become one of my first priorities and motivation right behind my kids. I wasn’t a money go-getter before I just had decent work ethic. Now since it’s no longer just me I’m looking out for I had to elevate a little.
2.How would you describe your music? What song would you recommend to someone whose never listened to your music before? I’d describe it as mellow to a degree with some old-school funk in there somewhere. I’m an old soul and I love the California vibe. My dad raised me on Maze, Frankie Beverly, Hall & Oates, Kenny G. We listened to watercolors a lot on his Sirius radio. So I guess I always just wanted to hear myself like that if that makes sense. And a song I’d recommend would be “Decent”.
3. On April 8th you tweeted: “Getting samples cleared is a pain I don’t wish on anyone.. lowkey thinking about looking for a manager or something..” What sample were you trying to get cleared? What is the process of clearing a sample? I was trying to get this J. Stalin sample cleared and the process I went through was literally like shooting in the dark. I had to look up the sample on this website. (I forgot the name of it) The website searches the song and pulls up the studio/ producer/ or label that owns the song then from there you have to get in touch with them in whatever way you can. If I were more tapped in or under a label it might’ve been easier but I didn’t even make it past the search. They couldn’t find the song I was attempting to use.
4.What’s one lesson you’ve learned since you started doing music professionally? Consistency is key. I hear the interview with Nipsey constantly in my head where he says he went through all the emotions. He just didn’t quit. I’ve gone through it all and it all damn near broke me but because I didn’t quit. I’m starting to see the results.
5.What’s next for Devon $.U.A.V.E. in 2021? What’s next for the kid is a good question. All I can say right now is God keeps showing me to keep pushing forward each time I wanna let up or step back he shows me why I should instead step up. Like Richard Pryor said “Don’t lighten up Tighten up”.
